Kenya Job: EMERGENCY SOCIAL WORKERS, ESW (6 Positions)
Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Service Kenya/Djibouti Programme is seeking to recruit a Kenyan national for the above position, to be based in Dadaab Refugee Camp and shall be responsible for the emergency operation projects in the camps. Their work will focus on the new arrivals at the reception centers and within the new arrival settlement zones.  They will be involved in case assessment and management of 10 social services clerk in each camp and the implementation of activities using a community-based psychosocial approach.

He/She will be expected to work to address LWF’s responsibilities for Social Work Management during the emergency period as outlined in the LWF Emergency Operation Manual on Responsibilities during emergency period.

The Emergency Social Worker will report to the Emergency officer who will report to the camp management officer in the performance of his/her duties and responsibilities, which shall include the following;

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and supervise the Social Service Clerks in all their duties at the reception centers and  Section Posts including assessments, provision of information on camp services, following-up and referring of vulnerable persons
  • Carry out social assessment in the camps to establish individual needs and to form supporting activities like self –help groups and other relevant activities with a psychosocial approach.
  • Coordinate assessment and other activities with Planning and Security in order to integrate all activities between the different sectors.
  • Facilitate inter-agency referral process for refugees in need as well as carry out follow- ups and provide feedbacks on referred cases to responsible agency. 
  • Work with and support community-based structures in social and psychosocial issues - representative committees as well as institutions (e.g. traditional, cultural and religious mechanisms).
  • Work with refugee leaders and committees to ensure mechanisms established to address and uphold respect for the human rights of all individuals and promote gender equity and inclusion of minority and vulnerable persons.
  • Implement planned activities in accordance with approved work plans, budgets and regulations of LWF and her partners and donors.
  • Supervise and participate in issuing basic non food items to vulnerable new arrival and keeping  records on all distributed NFI’s and list of bon fide beneficiaries in hard and soft copies.
  • Weekly meetings with social service staff to coordinate and clarify all information and points of interventions
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports detailing the progress and achievement of project outputs and objectives, the challenges faced and how they were tackled and recommendations for subsequent phases 
  • Responsible for ensuring all staff under His/Her supervision observe the highest standards of the Code of Conduct for humanitarian workers, refugee protection and prevention of sexual abuse and exploitation of beneficiaries.
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor or designate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Diploma in Community Development from a reputable institution.
  • K.C.S.E. Certificate with a mean grade of B
  • Computer literate especially in Excel, Access and Word.
Experience:    
  • At least 3 years experience in community work.
  • Knowledge in data entry and formation of data collection tools.
  • Professional experience working with international organizations/ NGO and experience of humanitarian principles, SPHERE and UNHCR standards and field security protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge in community psychosocial based support.
  • Fluency in Kiswahili and English (written and spoken).  Somali language an added advantage.  
Relevant Experience and skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and quick response experiences in humanitarian contexts.
  • Experience working with refugees and/or local communities to promote community-based structures and institutions for self-management.

  • High level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility.
  • Ability to tolerate cultural, educational and religious diversity in the work place
  • Excellent communication, organization and presentation skills.
  • Able to work in a team with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure, tight deadlines and adverse climate
  • General knowledge about the political, socio-economic and social situation of the region
