Summary: Provide HIV counselling, testing and referral services to MSM. The position holder will spend approximately 50% of the time in Kilfi and 50% in Malindi
REPORTING LINES:
- Steve Wale (senior Counsellor coordinator), Elise van der Elst and Bibi Mbete (line managers) Eduard Sanders (project leader)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
General tasks:
- Conducts HIV counseling, testing and referral using the tools provided.
- Records and files client data in a safe and confidentially manner
- Follows all relevant SOPs
- Mobilizes and facilitates community outreach activities
- Facilitates community sensitization on working with MSM
In the field/community:
- Gets new contacts in different areas (collaborate with cohort helpers and/or outreach workers)
- Gives health talks about sexual matters and explores areas for medical services
- Advocates/promotes the Malindi Drop-in services and invites those who are interested in our research
- Gives out information pamphlets.
At HIV-Community Centres Malindi and Kilifi:
- Manages the clients and gives information about the services we offer.
- Registers clients (VCT / HTC / CCC)
- Administers HIV-test, provides pre-post-HIV-test counselling, and risk reduction counselling
- Keeps track of VCT supplies
- Screens potential study volunteers and enrols into relevant study protocols
- Assesses and ensures understanding of informed consent content
- Completes and reviews volunteer study file for HIV negative and positive volunteers
- Obtains and signs informed consent
- Watches consent video and STD DVD with clients and explains each step
- Completes counsellors notes
- Conducts phlebotomy and obtains specimens
- Delivers samples from phlebotomy to site lab
- Labels specimen tubes/bottles according to protocol specific requirements
SKILLS AND COMPETENCE:
- C plain and above at KCSE level
- Counselling Certificate from a recognised institution
- VCT certificate from NASCOP Ministry of Health
- Peer Education Certificate
- Must have worked closely and interacted with the MSM community
- Candidates from the target community with experience in dealing with MSM in Malindi area have an added advantage
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
